John 2:1-11 recoded an event that Jesus changes water into wine. How are we to understand
this event? I believe that if we are to rightly understand this story, we have to think
John 1:1 to John 2:11 is a large single “unit”. And this single “unit” or “block”
presents a micro-picture of the whole Bible. This micro-picture ( or micro-message )
of the Bible is as follows: 1) The Creation; 2) The Fall; 3) The Means of Redemption; 4)
Gathering of the Redeemed; 5) The Consummation.
John 1:1-3 ( The Creation ) tells us that Jesus is God himself. And Jesus has created the world
and everything in it. John 1:4-18 ( The Fall ) tells us that the whole world is rejecting Jesus.
It is because they love darkness rather than Light. John 1:19-34 ( Means of Redemption ) tells
us that how does God provide solution to the corrupted condition of human being. God does so by
appointing Jesus to be the Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of his people. John 1:35-51 ( Gathering
of the Redeemed ) tells us that God has already begun his saving work. Jesus saves people by calling
them to follow Him. It goes without saying that Jesus first regenerate disciples’ heart in order
that they are willing to forsake darkness and follow the Light. And finally John 2:1-11 ( The
Consummation ) brings us that heavenly wedding. The Gathering of the Redeemed has to stop at some
point in human history. Then immediately it usher in the final eschatology, that is Christ the
bridegroom will come again to take his bride ( the church ) to attend the heavenly Wedding. ( see
Revelation 19: 7-9 ) Therefore this miracle of changing water into wine, is a pre-signaling the
final Consummated Wedding ( or eschatological Wedding ) of the church and her bridegroom.
